Martin Guitars Model 000

000 Martin Guitars

Martin Guitar models use a labeling system containing an initial letter, number, or series of zeros specifying the body size and style. The Martin Model 5- is the smallest, advancing in size through 4-, 3-, 2-, 1-, 0-, 00- and 000- (though referred to as "Oh", "triple-oh", etc. they are actually denoted by zeros). These instruments originally had necks that joined the body at the 12th fret.

In 1916 Martin contracted with Ditson's music store to produce the "Dreadnought," a larger store-branded guitar to compete sonically in ensembles.

In 1931, Martin introduced D-bodied guitars under the C.F. Martin name. Around the same time, Martin introduced the OM models. Starting with the body of the 000-models, the Martin OM was squared at the shoulder to meet the body at the 14th fret and lengthen the scale. The 14-fret body of the OMs proved so popular that it quickly became the standard for 00-, 000-, and D- models as well.
